| Cultural regions where chopsticks are used | ![]() |

| There are two food cultures in Asia in which people eat rice as a staple food: "hand-eating" cultures and "chopstick-eating" cultures. South Asia is called a "hand-eating" culture, as its rice is the indica variety, which doesn't stick together, while East Asia, with its sticky japonica rice, is a "chopstick-eating" culture. With the present diversified Japanese diet, we eat a wide range of rice dishes such as curry rice, hashed beef and rice, rice pilaf, and rice bowls with various toppings. We use spoons for these dishes. |
